What does it really mean to celebrate a decade?

Perhaps it's less about marking time and more about honouring what consistency creates. Ten years of showing up. Ten years of navigating challenges, embracing reinvention, and building communities that outlast moments. The milestone itself isn't the achievement. It's the thousands of hours, conversations, risks, and collaborations that quietly shape culture over time.

As SPACES AFRICA reflects on ten years of curating platforms, experiences, and creative communities, the anniversary presents an opportunity to spotlight those walking a similar path. The platforms doing the often invisible work of creating space, nurturing talent, and expanding what culture can look and sound like. Few embody that spirit quite like BeatsByHer.

BeatsByHer x SPACES AFRICA

More than a music event, BeatsByHer has emerged as a cultural catalyst within South Africa's alternative music landscape. What began as a femme-led sonic experience has evolved into a thriving ecosystem where DJs, selectors, collectors, and music enthusiasts gather to discover new sounds, forge meaningful connections, and imagine new possibilities for the future of music culture

Redefining the Sonic Experience

Innovation has always been rooted in the ability to see beyond what's already there. For SPACES AFRICA, that has meant creating platforms that amplify overlooked voices and challenge conventional ways of experiencing culture. For BeatsByHer, it means reimagining what a music community can become when inclusion, creativity, and intentional curation sit at its centre.

Step into a BeatsByHer experience and you'll find more than music filling the room. Basslines pulse through the space like a second heartbeat. Conversations drift between strangers who quickly become collaborators. Genres bend, blend, and evolve. The dance floor becomes less of a destination and more of a meeting point, where creativity moves freely between speakers, people, and ideas.

Founded in 2022 through Artivist/Untitled Basement, BeatsByHer was created to showcase the depth and diversity of South Africa's alternative women DJs, selectors, collectors, and music lovers. Yet its impact extends far beyond representation. At its core, the platform exists to create pathways. Pathways for emerging talent to develop their craft, grow audiences, and become part of a community rooted in mentorship, support, and shared growth

An Ecosystem Built Through Intention

Much of that growth has been made possible through the platform's home at Artivist/Untitled Basement. More than a venue, the space has become fertile ground for community-building, providing a consistent environment where relationships can flourish, and culture can be cultivated over time.

In an era where many creative experiences are designed for virality, BeatsByHer has focused on sustainability. Its approach is less about creating moments and more about building ecosystems. Spaces where knowledge is shared. Opportunities are created. Communities are strengthened. And emerging artists can develop beyond a single performance slot.

Behind that vision is curator, DJ, and cultural architect Mamthug, alongside veteran event curator Sfiso Gcabashe, whose contribution to South Africa's alternative music landscape has helped shape BeatsByHer into a platform with both cultural significance and long-term purpose.

For Mamthug, the mission is deeply personal. Having experienced the realities of navigating a male-dominated music industry, she understands both the barriers facing emerging talent and the transformative power of community support. Her vision is not simply to create opportunities but to extend the same support structures that helped shape her own journey.

That philosophy remains the platform's guiding force: building a femme-led music ecosystem centred on inclusion, skills transfer, growth, development, and meaningful visibility for underrepresented talent.

Why BeatsByHer Matters

The significance of BeatsByHer lies in its ability to challenge long-standing assumptions about who gets to shape music culture. Rather than positioning women as participants within existing systems, the platform actively creates new spaces where they can lead, influence, and redefine the conversation.

Its impact can be felt far beyond Johannesburg. Through its commitment to diverse sounds, emerging selectors, and cross-cultural exchange, BeatsByHer reflects the increasingly interconnected nature of contemporary African music culture. It celebrates local scenes while remaining in conversation with movements shaping dance floors across the continent and the broader global landscape. This is not simply about creating visibility. It's about creating possibility.

Celebrating the Next Ten Years

As SPACES AFRICA reflects on a decade of creating platforms for African creativity, its collaboration with BeatsByHer points toward the kind of future both platforms are helping to build. A future where intentional spaces matter. Where collaboration becomes a cultural currency. And where underrepresented voices are not invited into existing rooms as an afterthought, but are empowered to build new rooms altogether.

Because the most meaningful cultural shifts rarely begin when the music starts.

They begin much earlier.
In the vision to create a platform.
In the courage to make space.

And in the decision to hand someone else the aux cord and trust them to change the soundtrack.
